Abstract

Despite the increasing importance of cultural diversity, xenophobic attitudes are still a common phenomenon. Under certain circumstances, group contact might lead to reduced negative attitudes. Therefore, we examined xenophobia of international students. The central question of this crosssectional study is whether longer stays abroad are associated with less xenophobia. We further investigated whether the quality of intercultural contacts explains the link between duration of stay and xenophobia and whether the direct effect depends on the intercultural competence. The results show that good contacts with locals are linked to less xenophobia. However, this does not depend on the time a person has spent abroad. The duration of stay is directly linked to xenophobia for those participants who have a higher intercultural competence.
