,Die nächste Generation in Europa‘. Aufgaben der außerschulischen Jugendbildung
European developments are dominated by markets, media and politics. They change much faster than attitudes and competences of the citizens. Moreover, formal education systems tend to follow socio-economic developments with great delay, so that young people largely rely on informal learning to cope with the present challenges. Nevertheless 75 Mio young Europeans will soon decide on the European future. Here, extra-mural youth education and voluntary agencies could step in to decrease the knowledge and competence gap. But limited research is still available, to what extent and with which effect courses, projects, exchange programmes etc. are offered, to encourage European views and attitudes. Therefore it is analysed with a German focus: How the working contexts of the extra-mural youth institutions influence such opportunities; in which way the previous socialisation and formal education of the young limit an European outlook; why informal learning may be an important although neglected dimension; whether the clientele gets support; and finally to what extent at least sporadic courses, projects and networks are available. A brief outlook summarizes the ongoing challenges.
