Abstract

Recent empirical research found high correlations between educational attainment and democratization within societies, especially in African societies. This phenomenon is shown when educational systems actively subvert authoritarian regimes, aligning with the tenets of Global Citizenship Education, which advocates for democratic values and emancipatory pedagogy. This paper presents an indepth case study of a project between practitioners and academics from Togo and Germany that focused on the development and adaptation of educational resources for youth-oriented workshops, also translated into several African languages such as Swahili, Hausa, Ewe, and Kabiyè. These workshops use a peer-teaching model, facilitating a reciprocal learning environment among the youth. The overarching aim is to leverage educational frameworks to advance decolonization, peace, democratic principles, and sustainability. Furthermore, this study critically examines the inherent challenges and dynamics of international cooperation in the youth sector, particularly between entities in the Global North and South, providing insights into the complexities of cross-geographical educational collaborations.
