This article examines the relationship between performance, inequality and educational equity and challenges the widespread tendency to frame performance and equity as opposing goals. It distinguishes between inevitable individual differences in educational performance and their systematic reinforcement along social lines. Educational equity is understood not as equality of outcomes, but as ensuring a basic level of education for all while simultaneously fostering individual potential. From this perspective, education systems need to be developed in ways that enable them to respond productively to differences and reduce the influence of social background on educational trajectories.
