Das Automobil entwickelte sich im Lauf des 20. Jahrhunderts zum alltäglichen Konsumgut. Das Ende seiner Lebensdauer warf dabei von Beginn an umweltrelevante Fragen auf. Die Studie untersucht aus technischer, wirtschaftlicher, ökologischer und politischer Perspektive historische Praktiken und Strategien der Entsorgung. Themen sind Techniken der Verschrottung ebenso wie die Grenzen des Automobilrecyclings, der Umgang mit Altreifen oder Fragen der Produktverantwortung.

Anna-Maria Winkler’s convincing study [...] asks how Germany and Austria organized the waste management of automobiles between the 1960s and the early 2000s. Her study thus offers new perspectives on automobility, transcending traditional narratives that point to the role of the automotive industry as an economic barometer or the automobile as a mass consumer good.
