To ensure high-quality education for sustainable development (ESD), both instrumental ESD and critical-emancipatory ESD are required, which Vare and Scott also refer to as ESD1 and ESD2 (cf. Vare & Scott, 2007, p. 191). In addition to the thematisation of individual responsibility within the framework of instrumental ESD, political-social responsibilities can also be taken into account in the sense of critical-emancipatory ESD by enabling a discussion of the conflicts and dilemmas inherent in sustainability topics to take place in the classroom. This article argues from an elementary school pedagogical perspective for the didactic use of conflicts and dilemmas in the context of sustainable development issues within the framework of a critical-emancipatory ESD in order to enable primary school children to think and act in a sustainable way.
