Abstract

Research and practice-oriented teaching in higher education poses many challenges for teaching staff. Academic quality criteria must be adhered to, innovation and experimentation must be welcomed and a view beyond the university’s own horizons in line with a third mission must be adopted. If the complexity of sustainable development issues is added to these points, the pedagogical tasks of service-learning seminars seem enormous. In an analysis conducted in the BMBF-funded „Senatra“ project, expected hurdles to high-quality academic training were identified in the potential span of cooperation with practice partner institutions. This article shows how an adapted model based on the knowledge transfer model RIU – Research, Integration, Utilization – helps to meet this challenge and facilitates the design of a successful service-learning seminar.
