The article deals with the scientific history of the field of Education in Africa in German-speaking countries, which is assigned to the sub-discipline of Comparative Education, as it was academically organized in the 1960s. In analogy to the formation of ice crystals, which arise and develop into various forms and possibly decay, depending on environmental conditions, crystallization points are postulated, which represent the entanglements of social framework conditions with discourses of longerterm and recurring duration. Three crystallization points in the history of scientific debates on Education in Africa are outlined in the text: the constitution of the so-called Third World, the connection between education and colonialism and the challenges of German-German science communication after the 1990 turning point of the German reunion.
