Abstract
This contribution examines the appreciation of education and educational qualifications by the Swiss population in the German-speaking cantons. A population survey conducted among adults in the German-speaking part of Switzerland in spring 2019 shows that vocational training enjoys a higher prestige than general education. The highest prestige, however, is experienced by the academic qualifications. The younger birth cohorts in particular attach great reputation to university degrees while, in particular, elder cohorts appreciate the general and vocational education. In addition, it is revealed that the reputation of educational qualifications correlates with social background, educational level, gender and understanding of education. A particularly striking difference in the appreciation of professional or academic training is between people with academic and professional training.
