Abstract

How can prospective and new teachers be prepared to shape a democratic school and teaching culture and counter anti-democratic confrontations at school? This article examines democratic concepts and practical experiences in schools, to then explore the position and role of “democratic education” in teacher training programs looking at exemplary cases. This is complemented by considerations for the initial and continuing education of teachers that take into account the professionalization of democratic education as an overarching task. Finally, the need for further development and research from an educational science perspective is addressed.
