Abstract

In this interview, two young people talk about their individual approaches to Student council work. They reflect on key experiences, challenges and conditions for success in political education and democratic participation in the school context. Their perspectives make it clear that the quality of democratic education and opportunities for participation in schools is still heavily dependent on individual committed teachers and differs greatly between school types. Against this backdrop, the interviewees argue for clear, binding standards, institutionally secured opportunities for participation and adequate resources for the tasks of student representatives. At the same time, it becomes clear that the demand for effective co-determination is by no means only formulated for the individual school and its specific organization. It is at least as much about the big political issues and about establishing the student council as a serious player in education policy.
