Abstract

Ethnography is appreciated as a research strategy which is sensitive to culture and context. However, this appreciation is often entangled with the assumption that each field site has a logic of its own. A comparison between different field sites is therefore considered to be a disclosure of ethnography’s sensitivity towards the field site. In contrast, this article proposes that comparisons between different field sites are not only possible, but even highly productive for the ethnographer’s sensitivity towards his or her research fields. Building on an ethnographic research project on children’s agency during transition to school this article explores how thick comparisons challenge notions of separateness, create movement and conceptual fluidity and bring into sight how ethnographers are part of the phenomena they research.
