Abstract

The success of environmental education substantially depends on the educational methods that are applied. In order to identify appropriate educational methods, an evidencebased strategy that makes use of empirical effectiveness studies seems promising. Therefore, the current study provides a review of international metaanalyses that investigate the effectiveness of environmental education. The literature search yielded five metaanalyses that examine effects on environmental knowledge, attitudes, or behaviors. The results of the metaanalyses suggest that active learning/actionbased learning, modelling, encouraging goal setting, selfcommitment, stimulating cognitive dissonances, variety of learning activities, nature experiences and mindfulness trainings promote learning outcomes. The results are discussed in the light of strengths and weaknesses of the research review.
