Abstract

Pedagogical architecture emerges from the interplay between pedagogy and space. However, pedagogical architecture means more than just “enclosed space”, because spatial aspects open possibilities, create conditions, and provide an impetus and framework for the development of schools. A more attractive and pedagogically thought-out learning environment, especially when it is created in exchange with all those involved in the school, conveys appreciation, expands the pedagogical scope for action and can contribute to increasing students’ ability and motivation to learn. Accordingly, changes in learning spaces imply the potential to initiate school development processes, as currently intended in the “Startchancen” program for schools in disadvantaged areas through a budget for school architecture. The project “Consultancy Pedagogical Architecture” of QUA-LiS NRW offers here a support for a multi-professional, participative process design.
