The “Hauptschule” [lower secondary modern school] is shortly depicted as type of school in its development subject to demographic trends. Nowadays, “Hauptschulen” exist only in a few federal states and have become school-organizationally independent only in North Rhine-Westphalia. Difficult conditions for the performance of “Hauptschulen” arise if they compete for pupils directly against comprehensive schools. The admittance of secondary school level I certificates at “Hauptschulen” leads to new discriminations of the graduates.
