The contribution focuses on the discursive construction of an imagined space for education, research and innovation in Europe, which becomes powerful in guiding policy action in terms of providing common problem definitions, setting hegemonic objectives and legitimating specific logics of intervention. The main lines of this development are retraced and the characteristics of the current state of play outlined. The paper closes with some concluding remarks on the role of education research in the current European research agenda.
