Abstract

This article explores the representation of Africa in history textbooks for secondary schools. Based on the analysis of three contemporary textbooks, the authors demonstrate negative depictions of Africa, but also point out positive developments concerning the presentation of the continent, its history and population. In their conclusion they relate the results of their analysis to an awareness of discourses that have been reproduced until the present day and of forms of everyday racism.
