Abstract

After being for decades a classical ‚non-issue‘ (exception: Melber 1992) in development cooperation over here, during the last decade an increasing attention to racism can be detected. Not least due to a series of studies (White 2002; Goudge 2003; Kothari 2006a, 2006b; Kiesel/Bendix 2010; Glokal 2012; Wilson 2013). The attention is thanks to the thesis of a still often encountered consistency of a western perception of societies and people of Africa, Asia and Latin America that is observable in the colonial area as well as in development cooperation. This thesis and the associated question of racism in development cooperation will be pursued in this article. In doing so this doesn’t aim on registration and denunciation of racist behavior of single persons working in development cooperation but on reflecting the deeper structures.
