The article looks closely at the result chain as an instrument of project management which continuously has come along with development cooperation and development education in Germany. Apart from the historical-political roots of performance monitoring pressed for by donors and which is closely associated with such instruments, the author attends to the current debate on the impact analysis of national and international projects. Questions about attentively considered aspects in the context of impact evaluation, handling complexity and how project managers as well as evaluators are stretched to their limits, are leading in the final analysis to crucial recommendations addressing donors, project managers and evaluators.
