Abstract

As a result of the international discussion on the impact of development cooperation also in the field of development education ‘impact orientation’ is currently being discussed intensively. However, it seems that there are no coherent definitions of the concepts, which hampers argumentation and discussion. Terms like impact orientation, impact monitoring, impact measurement appear to be used synonymously. Discussions on survey design and data collection methods are also mixed up. The article gives a clarification on the different concepts. It shows especially that the actually discussed designs provide an opportunity for practitioners involved in development education and do not need comprehensive“ specific competence in empirical research” (Jungk 2010, p. 21) as it is sometimes stated.
