How Do One-Euro-Jobs and Short-Term Training Programs Affect Labor Market Prospects of Young Adults in Different Family Contexts?

The article is concerned with the question whether active labor market programs effectively improve the employment prospects of young participants in different family contexts. If the transition to employment overlaps with partnership and family formation during young adulthood, unemployed men and women have to arrange their family commitments with job search and programme participation as well as with employment entry. Based on administrative data, the present study investigates the impact of ‘One-Euro-Jobs’ and short-term training for 18- to 30-year-old welfare recipients by applying methods of propensity score matching. Young mothers particularly benefit from program participation, even from participation in ‘One-Euro-Jobs’. On this basis, causal mechanisms hitherto not considered in evaluation studies as well as approaches for further research are discussed.
