Abstract

The implementation of educational standards in the years 2004–2006 has sparked off an on-going debate about competency-based education on the one hand and student-orientation on the other. However, if the emphasis on competencies was not interpreted as a mere focus on cognitive learning outcomes, but rather as a concept for individual support, it could be positioned amongst traditional educational ideals, enriching them by adding differentiated strategies for teaching and learning.
