Abstract
For most children in Germany early childhood education and care (ECEC) is the first institutionalized learning environment. For ensuring sufficient provision as well as for guaranteeing high quality, it is essential to project future demands for the ECEC system. This article describes an approach to project children’s ECEC participation and the demand for qualified staff working in the German ECEC system. In addition, it presents preliminary results of population projection serving as indicators for future participation in ECEC.
