This study drew on Bourdieu’s theoretical observations to consider how much the acquisition of cultural assets influences individuals’ choice of recreational activities, cultural activities in particular. The accumulated ALLBUS data records from 1998 and 2004 were analyzed to determine how much cultural assets (in this case, the individual’s level of education and the educational background of the father) influence selection of cultural recreational activities, and how influential these assets are relative to other socio-demographic factors. Further analysis sought answers to these questions: is social background more likely than level of education to influence individuals’ selection of cultural recreational activities, and do academic professions correlate with different preferences regarding recreational activities, as Bourdieu suggests? The study also considers if individuals take part in highly prestigious cultural activities to strengthen their own social position, as reflected in their occupational status.
