Schools have the task to facilitate and to impart democratic learning – but regarding their tradition and organization, they themselves are not substantially democratic. This article deals with the question, which ways, activities, and especially which aspects of school development can contribute to a democratic design of schools. Therefore, the author sketches the practical focus of democratic education and traces both the achievements of its research approaches and the criticism of those, focusing on the German discussion and development.
