Abstract

International youth encounters in countries of development cooperation enable participants to develop an image of a country/continent that is experience-based instead of theoretically conveyed. Based on the data of a qualitative research project on international youth encounters in a North-South context, the article describes the perception of Africa of a German youth group after a three-week trip to Rwanda: Africans depend (financially) on developed countries. Despite their poverty, Africans are content and there’s a comfortable ambience. They sing and dance and faith plays an important role. To conclude, it is discussed how encounters need to be designed to prevent such images that are deficit-oriented and romanticize poverty.
