Language competencies are crucial for success in the German educational system. The findings from the IQB-Ländervergleich 2011 (federal states comparison test of national educational standards) for elementary schools once again show that students from immigrant families are less proficient in German than their peers from native families. Special support for reading and second language acquisition is therefore needed.
