Abstract

The present report deals with the relevance of learning the neighbour’s language and the development of intercultural skills in the German-Polish border region. The paper starts with the language learning offers for Polish at schools in the German Federal States of Brandenburg, Saxony and Mecklenburg-West Pomerania. Particular emphasis is put on the early second language acquisition in the primary school. To analyse the relevance of early second language acquisition, 30 nursery, primary school teachers and collaborators of cross border education projects were questioned in expert interviews. Likewise 18 parents of primary school pupils, who take part in Polish lessons, stated their points of view in four group discussions. The qualitative analysis of these interviews shows that it is necessary to modify the handling of the neighbouring language Polish in schools of the border region. Thereby the focus should be put on primary and secondary schools.
