To begin with, the article provides a comprehensive chronological account of the academic discussion on homework over the past 50 years. It demonstrates, on the one side, that many aspects and problems of the discussion have proven a high level of consistency, while on the other side, new perspectives and theoretical approaches have oft en created fresh approaches to the topic. The article further provides an integrating process model of the function of homework which can be implemented in theoretical, empirical and didactic contexts and is meant to provide a basis for further developments.
