Innovations in the Educational System: Conceptual Approaches to the Novel

Based on the observation that processes of change in the German educational system are increasingly described as innovations, this article deals with the scientific use and meaning of this term and traces the history of its reception in the German educational sciences. In addition, references are made to alternative conceptions like school reform, school development, and transfer. An outlook for the potentials of an educational innovation research closes the article.
