Abstract

Indigenous teacher training in Mexico has been characterized by conflict. On the one hand, though national education and teacher training programs espouse an official intercultural discourse, their ideal is still maintaining homogeneity. On the other hand, Indigenous teacher and community organizations in several states have developed projects and institutions in order to satisfy Indigenous political and educational necessities, based on their own cultural background. This article reviews the history of Mexican Indigenous teacher training, and presents various Indigenous initiatives. Finally, it focuses on how teachers experience discrimination and intercultural conflicts on a personal level. The author connects her own experiences as Indigenous teacher trainer with research results of other specialists on the subject.
