Abstract

The reported study seeks to deepen our understanding of the role of nation state government in relation to globalisation, and in particular in relation to Europeanisation. Using current policy of the Flemish government (Belgium) as a case, this study demonstrates the emergence of a new mode of government or regulation, that is, government through ‘feedback on performance’. Additionally, other scales of government (at school and class level) will be discussed briefly in order to display the wide distribu-tion of government through ‘feedback on performance’. Hence, we regard this proliferation of gov-ernment through ‘feedback on performance’ as indicating a general shift in how we are governed and govern ourselves. In the final section, we formulate some critical thoughts concerning the proliferation of ‘feedback on performance’.
