Abstract

The debate on the transferability of Vocational Education and Training (VET) systems is currently playing an increasing role in Germany. However, there are virtually no empirical findings which relate to the local influences on transfer activities. This paper contributes towards filling the research gap by ‘Home International Comparison’ of the qualification strategies between Mexican and German companies situated in Mexico. It attempts to identify the similarities and differences in the training activities provided by the companies and the factors that influence these. This study relies on 21 interviews with company representatives and other experts in the area of VET in Mexico. A semi-structured interview guideline – theory-based constructed – was used. The transcripts of the interviews were analysed and summarized into findings. The findings show differences and similarities between Mexican and German companies and point out the importance of compatibility of context factors such as national education system, labour market and social setting.
