Abstract

This paper presents an empirical study on the quality of learning processes within volunteer service programs in the Global South. The study focuses on the character of volunteers' individual learning processes. The qualitative research gives answers to the knowledge gap on how these learning processes are structured. The results show how, what and in which situations individuals learn. They also show how the individual and organizational background is relevant for situations of learning within this program-based setting. The paper states four types of learning processes. Characterizing them it can be shown that learning within volunteer service programs is shaped by biographical and individual factors and can be supported by program specifications.
