Abstract

The cultural history of humans is quasi embedded in the landscape, its perception and its change. Currently, the term ‘landscape’ is controversially discussed, conceptualised and theoretically newly illuminated in the different disciplines of geography, history and garden architecture. The modern-bourgeois concept of landscape was – with painting as a catalyst – based on the aestheticised perception of an idealised nature and generated real ideal landscapes in the landscape parks. The open concept of landscape of post-modernism, however, addresses – in an era of mobile social actors – urbanised areas, transportation corridors, shopping malls and scenic indoor imaginations as ‘micro-landscapes’. In the context of an interdisciplinary, historically profound cultural science, the interactions between natural and artificial environment, between representation, imagination and social actors offer diverse fields of research – by way of example, competing landscape constructs, subjective landscape consciousness, political landscapes of commemoration and urban micro landscapes.
