Abstract

In this article, the example of how regional spatial planning manages regional settlement development is used to argue that evaluation research and basic research in spatial planning increasingly converge. First, the relation between basic research and applied research is discussed. In the next chapter, the spectrum between the two poles of basic research and evaluation research is explained, based on a content analysis of research concerning the management of regional settlement development. It will be shown that the type of ‚basic-orientated evaluation research‘ has become increasingly important over the last few years. The concluding chapter will then give an outlook on further perspectives of basic-orientated evaluation research in spatial planning research.
