Municipal education reporting is in vogue. Thanks to extensive project funding from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), municipal education monitoring, which is in the tradition of national education reporting, has spread impressively throughout Germany. This article discusses programmatic assumptions about the added value of municipal education reporting. In stark contrast to the current education policy hype, it will be shown that the empirical findings on the steering effects of municipal education reports are meager.
