Research in schools serving disadvantaged communities is challenging. It takes interdisciplinary, multi-method approaches to capture the many sub-disciplines that interact in this field and to describe those characteristics of the social space that shape how children in these communities learn and grow. In this paper, the authors aim to provide an overview of the field. They first specify terms and concepts relevant to the field. They then summarize what we know so far about the mechanisms that influence successful organizational and instructional improvement that is sensitive to inequities and disadvantages in a socially segregated space.
Keywords
segregation in disadvantaged communities, reproduction of social inequality, context-sensitive school development
