Under the directives determined by the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of the States in the Federal Republic of Germany (KMK), the introductory phase at the crossover stage to secondary education serves as a bridge to the upper secondary level. We will look into the question which significance the Hessian teaching staff attributes to this year for the development of their pupils. We also will analyze whether there is a specific teaching practice. After thus exploring the potential of the introductory phase, it will be discussed in the context of the reduction of the upper secondary school’s duration from nine to eight years.
