Abstract

Various teaching materials are available free of charge for student teachers and in-service teachers which provide a comprehensive account of how to teach specific topics related to Global Education in class. The development of some of these materials shows a lack of professional reflection with regard to current standards and discussion in the overall discourse on Global Education. This paper critically considers an example of teaching material on “Living in a village in Africa” provided for student teachers in their German lessons in Elementary Schools. The materials’ didactical approach is discussed against the background of three core challenges associated with Global Education: (1) dealing with the complexity of worldwide interrelations, (2) conveying abstract phenomena and (3) applying an anti-racist perspective. The analysis provided in the article makes clear that the material does not adequately address the challenges named above from the perspective of current scientific findings on teaching and learning processes. Based on this, suggestions for the further development of the material are given.
