Abstract
The concept of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is seen in politics as an answer to the state of crisis in the world. However, the transformational hope associated with the concept is not being realised, also because there is a necessary discrepancy between its programmatic and its practical aspects. Schools as educational institutions are particularly called upon to teach and to implement ESD. The article provides reflections on the extent to which this is (im)possible.
