Abstract

Botanic gardens are havens of plant diversity. They are attractive places for recreation and education, but also fulfil tasks in scientific research and teaching and the conservation of endangered species. With these tasks, botanic gardens are subject to a wide range of legal rules and regulations, the implementation of which requires an enormous amount of work capacity. This article elucidates how botanic gardens are affected by political considerations and decisions at international and national level and how they deal with them. These challenges should be communicated more strongly in the educational and public relations work of botanic gardens.
