Abstract

Out-of-field teaching and its consequences have only played a marginal role in the German research context so far. By considering the different qualifications and ways of teacher-training in the federal states, a classification of teachers is provided along with causes for out-of-field teaching, data about the frequency at primary and secondary levels in Germany, and empirical findings about its consequences.
