Abstract

In the context of violent conflict education is often understood rather as a subordinated asset. Humans forced to flee initially seek to secure their survival. Main concerns are physical integrity and safety, shelter, access to water and food security. But for refugees education is quickly perceived as fundamentally important. Education may be a key to a better future for one’s family, regardless of whether a return to the region of origin is possible or not. In addition, education is a human right, which is an important requirement, especially for post-conflict societies, in order to overcome the aftermath of conflict and the emergence of peace. Education allows hope and dignity. Access to education is closely linked to the ability to overcome poverty, to achieve economic stability and growth and it offers the chance for a better life. In the following article the right to education is presented in the context of flight. The author looks on its implementation by introducing the example of Tamil refugees in southern India.
