The paper aims at developing some issues for a prospective communication and education for sustainable development. It is based on selected findings of the recent representative survey on ecological awareness in Germany. The paper begins with the impact of education regarding sustainable development followed by a reflection on the relationship of environmental knowledge, competencies and practices. Selected types of lifestyle will be presented regarding their ecological awareness and ecological behavior as well as potential issues in the communication and education for sustainable development. Finally, these deliberations will be discussed.
