German and American Studies in Sport, an international book series, focuses on relationships of German and American national and social developments in physical culture and sport. Although Germany and the United States of America developed philosophies of mind and body unique to their particular historical circumstances, established systems of physical culture based on the needs and demands particular to each and presently reflect distinct differences as far as the status of physical education and sport in society is concerned; nevertheless, many indeliable cross-cultural similarities exist between the two countries in both a historical and cultural context.
In the past, Germans and Americans have learned much about each other's systems of sport and physical culture. However, much more needs to be learned, understood, and profited from. Therefore, it is the aim of
German and American Studies in Sport to further improve the international understanding between Germany and America through the scholarly study of both similarities and differences in their systems of sport and physical education from a socio-cultural standpoint.
