This study – the first of its kind – points out how, after a slow start, the Leaguers managed to raise the consciousness of the Irish people and how, while major political changes were occuring in Irish society after the turn of the century, the Leaguers were led to the realization that they had become the victim of those processes that they, under the leadership of the charismatic Douglas Hyde, had triggered off themselves.
