The Russian Far East is known for its shamanistic traditions. In recent years there has been a revitalization of ethnic identities, leading to renewed recognition of these traditions among the Itelmen, Koryak and Even peoples of Kamchatka.

Through dance and music clips, as well as photos and the written word, this CD documents ongoing oral traditions, family songs and dances. These are not only the expression of cultural continuity. They also reflect the interaction between the traditional and the modern. Dance, music and art all demonstrate the cultural dynamism of the artistic process among the peoples of the North.

Der ferne Osten Russlands ist bekannt für seine schamanistischen Traditionen. Trotz gesellschaftlicher Veränderungen und zeitweiliger Verbote leben sie bei den Völkern Kamtschatkas - den Itelmenen, Korjaken und Evenen - bis heute fort und finden im Zuge ihrer kulturellen Selbstfindung in jüngerer Zeit erneut Beachtung.

Anhand von Tanz- und Musikbeispielen sowie von Fotos und Texten dokumentiert die CD-ROM den Fortbestand von Erzähltraditionen, Familiengesängen und den entsprechenden Tänzen. Sie sind Ausdruck ursprünglicher Identität und kultureller Kontinuität. Gleichzeitig wird in Tanz, Musik und Kunst auch die Auseinandersetzung mit Tradition und Moderne sichtbar. Vor allem bei spontanen Improvisationen zeigt sich die besondere Dynamik künstlerischer Prozesse im interkulturellen Kontext.
